Speedway had Night to Remember

Story by Randy Ward

Lawton, OK (September 7) - Saturday Night September 7, 2002 was a very emotional night for many at the Lawton Speedway. The evening started out with a special ceremony/tribute for Orbie Wilburn. Wilburn was a regular at the speedway but lost his life after he was involved in a fatal accident on I-40 on Labor Day. Wilburn’s family brought his race car to the speedway and it was apart of the ceremonies.

Factory Stock driver Josh Bishop won his heat race and then he went on to win his second straight trophy dash race of the season. Bishop dedicated the win to the Wilburn Family and then went into the grandstands and presented the trophy to the parents of Orbie Wilburn.

Over $1,700 was collected for the Orbie Wilburn Scholarship fund which has been established at SWOSU Foundation.
